Today's post is from stylist Christina Joy.
Last night's Academy Awards were a pleasant surprise. More of the ladies seemed to get it right this time.
Although it goes without saying that a select group of leading ladies didn't quite nail this performance. What many of them (and their stylists) tend to forget is that the Oscars are a stage and the world serves as their audience and critics. Now you wouldn't send an actress out on stage in the wrong costume without proper hair and make-up, would you? So why on the world stage do so many get it wrong?
I wish these women would remember that just because it's the Oscars it doesn't mean that you have to look overdone. Remember you have to work with what you have. It's always better to look "you" appropriate than not like you at all. Too many of the women look like they handed themselves over like dolls and said, "make me look good". There was an abundance of fussy hair, bad up-do's, fake tans and barely there make-up. While others chose the completely wrong dress for their features, age and look.
It also seemed like there was a lot of stylist influence which isn't always such a good thing. In other words, actresses were wearing looks and acclaimed designers not because it looked good on them but because they want to be viewed as fashion icons with a broad fashion vocabulary. Ladies, you shouldn't try so hard to make a statement because truth is, no one will remember what you're trying to say but they will remember how bad you looked.
But those who got it right nailed the formula - a dress that fits their figure and who they are plus luminous make-up that flatters their features balanced by hair that complements the whole look.
Halle Berry glowed and sparkled in Marchesa.
Mila Kunis was sweet yet mischievous in Elie Saab.
Scarlett Johansson was sexy and sultry in Dolce and Gabbana.
Reese Witherspoon was sleek and sophisticated in Armani Prive.
Mandy Moore looked fun and flirty performing on stage in a Monique Lhullier cobalt confection.
Camila Alves looked daring and different in Kaufman Franco.
Jennifer Lawrence was sunny and bright in Calvin Klein Collection.
Annette Bening was simple yet elegant in Naeem Khan.
Last but not least, Anne Hathaway got 3 of her 7 seven looks exactly right during the broadcast. Look 1 in Givenchy,
Look 2 in Lanvin and
Look 4 in Oscar de la Renta.

The package starts at $599 (a 30% discount). Visit http://www.westinriverfrontbeavercreek.com/. Available until April 17, 2011. A four night minimum stay is required; lodging tax, resort fees and gratuity are not included.

yon Film Club calleth
So there I was, browsing through the Netflix Instant Watch selections, a-wonderin' what the next selection will be. I was all "Hmm, what will the next selecti--OH MY GOD BLOOD AND ROSES."
Roger Vadim's 1960 lesbian vampire film is on Netflix Instant Watch. Roger Vadim's 1960 lesbian vampire film is the next Final Girl Film Club pick.
The movie: Blood and Roses (1960)
The due date: Tuesday, March 22
What you do:
Is the zombie waving or attacking? Only time will tell.

- Review the movie on your site. Add a link to Final Girl in there somewhere. If you've reviewed the film before, that's fine- but you must retrofit your review with a link to FG to be included in my round-up.
- Email your link to me at stacieponder at gmail dot com. Put 'film club' or some such in the subject line.
- Bask in the warm, glowing, warming glow of Film Club Day. Easy, breezy, et cetera et cetera.

I reviewed Drive Angry over at AfterEllen. Here's the link if you want to know what I thought about it (spoiler: I friggin' loved it). Then AfterEllen said "Instead of solely reviewing Drive Angry, can you also incorporate some fluff about Amber Heard's other roles in horror?"
I replied "Yes. Yes, I can." and then I did. Ka-blam!

On Our Radar: New York Palace for the Royal Wedding
The invites for Wills and Kate's April 29 wedding were sent out this week. Not one of the 1,900 guests invited? Here's a swank Plan B: Check into the New York Palace Hotel for its Royal Wedding Breakfast. You can opt to stay overnight or simply attend the breakfast that starts at 5:30 am with coffee and tea service. At 6 am, breakfast service will begin to correspond with the 11 am wedding start time in London and it concludes at 8 am with a champagne toast.
And since no royal wedding breakfast is complete without a few extras, you'll also get keepsake Palace slippers, “In Honour Of” printed menus and commemorative wedding “favors” (scented glass candles with an embossed crown logo).
The Royal Wedding Breakfast at the New York Palace is $150 and rooms start at $299. Find out more about the Royal Wedding Sunrise Breakfast.

Bridesmaids: The Trailer
Here's another reason we can't wait for spring: the release of Bridesmaids, the movie. The movie, starring Maya Rudolph as the bride and Kristen Wiig as her maid of honor doesn't open until May, but the trailer gives a sneak peek at the hilarity that awaits. We especially love the ideas they have for the bachelorette party!

Sponsored Post: Take a Spa Break
One of our favorite past times is taking spa breaks from our hectic schedules. We've done so all over: at the beach, the slopes, Texas hill country, in wine country, and of course even close to home.
If you're choosing a resort for a spa weekend, check out their specials and packages. Often times, you can get a spa credit in addition to your standard room rate which is less than buying a spa package separately. One popular combination of services is a facial, body scrub and massage. If your lucky, there's a spa lunch in the middle to break up your services. This also makes a great bonding day with your girlfriends if you're able to commune in the relaxation room between services or share a cup of tea. Just remember to drink lots of water after your treatments to flush out those toxins.
We're fans of the vichy shower treatment which we had on Amelia Island. It combined a scrub and massage with the healing power of dozens of jets streaming over your body. It's a good choice if you're looking for a single treatment, because sometimes you don't have a whole afternoon to spend at the spa especially if the beach or pool is calling you!
Spa days are a great way to relax and unwind, and who couldn't use that?

A Peek Inside Rachel of TNI's Carry On
This week we're looking inside Rachel Wolery's carry on bag. Rachel is a co-founder of ZipSetGo.com and host of Traveler's Night In twitter events on Thursdays. Tomorrow's is a biggie--in honor of the first TNI anniversary, the topic is Best of TNI and you can enter to win a Mac Book Air. Join in tomorrow 3:30-5 EST on twitter.
Rachel herself is a self-described travel junkie:
Traveling runs in my family, but I didn’t really catch the bug until I hit college and lived abroad three times in four years. Once I used my passport, I knew it was something that I was going to make a priority in my life. After a short stint working in public relations, my dream job fell into my lap. For the past 3 years I’ve held various roles for a top 25 meeting and incentive company traveling the world. A year ago three of my colleagues and I created the ZipSetGo.com community to share destination knowledge, and help travelers plan travel fast!"Here's what Rachel travels with:
I am really into my Cole Haan satchel right now. I love the cross body and shoulder strap, plus there are compartments to keep me organized and plenty of room for an ipad, and a rolled up change of clothes. If I had my way, I would be toting a Vera Wang for Hartmann mobile traveler as well.
What are some of your must have beauty products when you travel?
Some products that I am really loving right now are Say Yes To Cucumbers wipes, they are hydrating, portable and perfect for planes; I can’t put on makeup without using Clinique Even Better first; Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector for a little color and shine; aviator sunglasses are my quick fix for tired eyes, and lastly, a small bottle Miss Cherie Dior perfume for when I get off the plane.
What type of sweater or wrap do you use?
I wear a lot of cardigans during any season. Every woman travels with a wrap–those planes get chilly! I like to buy mine when I travel. My favorites are my rainbow of cashmere pashminas from the Florence markets, and my heavier Ikat designs from Ecuador. What music do you like to listen to when traveling?
I love to nap or read listening to Radiohead, Peter Bjorn and John, Aretha Franklin and Regina Spektor. It's such a treat to have time to do nothing but relax and catch up on reading. When it is almost time to land I listen to more upbeat music like MGMT, Pheonix, and hip-hop.Any recent or fave plane reads?
On the Road by Jack Kerouac is what I am reading now, it’s such a classic I am almost embarrassed to admit that this is my first time reading it! It’s about the author’s cross country adventure, inspiration to get out and travel. As for magazines, I usually pick up Scientific American Mind, psychology is a close favorite behind travel.Any fave plane snacks?
I always indulge in a soymilk green tea latte at the airport. I am also really enjoying Kind Bars at Starbucks.Where have you traveled to recently?
I just got back from a ski vacation to Colorado, hitting the slopes at Vail (below), Breckenridge and Beavercreek and relaxing at night. I love the small mountain towns, they look like they belong inside a snow globe. Before that my family and I went on a vacation to Ecuador, getting off the beaten path and exploring the mountains and markets.

Film Club: Frozen
People, I have had a big day of 1) talking about Frozen with my mom, 2) playing the Dragon Age II demo and writing a review of it, 3) going to a screening of a movie I'm not supposed to talk about until Friday (which should narrow it down for you), and 4) well, #4 hasn't happened yet, but I'm gonna hafta link to a whole mess of people for this installment, because gobs of you turned out to talk about this month's film...to which I say hooray. Hooray, kind sirs and sir-ettes. Oh, and the reason I'm telling you I had a big day is because 1) it's the reason why I'm posting this so late and 2) it's the reason why my review will be rather short. There will be 30+ other reviews linked up here, though (SAY WHAT), so I'm sure someone else can fill in whatever I lack.
And I guess I'm really into incorporating numbered lists into my sentences today because 1) I don't know why.
So! Frozen. Three assholes con their way onto ski slopes without paying those expensive lift ticket prices. Three assholes end up stranded on the chair lift because no one knows they're up there when the slope closes for the night. Three assholes try a few ways to save themselves: jumping, heading down the line to a climbable pole. Three assholes encounter many hardships, such as wolves, wolves, and frostbite. One asshole survives.
Now, I realize that all makes it sound as if I didn't like Frozen, which is not the case. Well, that's not entirely true, for I pretty much loathed the first half hour, full of character development by way of assholery. The "girlfriend coming between two friends and their bro time" angle simply made for characters that are unpleasant. Maybe I was supposed to be rooting for their deaths? Maybe it's all supposed to be some big morality play and the stranding/wolfnanigans are cosmic payment for their generally foul natures and thievery? That seems like a bit of a stretch, and thus my battle cry is yelped once more: please, just make some likable characters.
Once they all got stuck up there in the dark- in the night...in the dark (sorry, Haunting moment there)- things picked up and I found myself getting into it. The characters remained fairly assholey and shallow, despite all the "Remember that time?" stories meant to add depth, but the situation was interesting/dire/tense enough that I was interested in their fates nonetheless. Add in some cringe-worthy gore and I was satisfied enough. It made me particularly grateful to be warm and dry, so I suppose it was evocative enough.
But. But but but. Now, I realize that, Kane Hodder cameo aside, a viewer who's not ensconced in the indie horror scene might not notice, but...for fuck's sake. kay, Adam Green, we get it. You love your horror filmmaking buddies. You really do, and you seem like a good friend, but we get it. Does every character name have to be pulled from the home page at Dread Central? You've got characters named Joe Lynch, (Dave) Parker, (Spooky) Dan Walker (complete with the "Yeah, that's Spooky, Dan" line), (Ryan) Schifrin, and (Adam) Rifkin. I don't know, maybe I should ignore it. But it's so bro-y, you know? Like the dudes stranded on the chairlift, who love the same movies Adam Green loves, who hit on a girl played by Adam Green's wife. Does this have any bearing on the movie itself, or is it just too wizard-behind-the-curtain for me and so my personal experience suffers? Eh. Probably doesn't matter, but I'm just saying. I noticed.
Oh, and who the fuck gets excited over Papa Gino's pizza? It's gross. And I'm not sure that Newbury Comics would really post a big billboard at a ski resort, but I used to work there, so hey.
Film Club Coolies, y'all! Give 'em love.

See Liz Taylor'sand Princess Grace's Jewels at the Cooper Hewitt
Each piece of Van Cleef and Arpels jewelry is so stunning and undeniably a work of art, it's only fitting that it's the focus of the Set in Style exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York. The exhibit features gorgeous pieces, including Princess Grace's diamond and pearl engagement ring (above) and this Lamartine bracelet (below), along with matching earrings, that Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor in 1971, because they matched violet eyes.
You'll also see examples of the famed Van Cleef and Arpels zipper necklaces that transform into bracelets and this Walska Brooch/pendant. Originally a "push" present, it features wings that become earrings, a tail that's a brooch and a 95-carat yellow diamond in the bird's beak that can also be worn as a pendant.
The exhibition runs through June 5.

once more, with feeling
Yes, my friends, let's do the The Product Dance one more time! I have a feeling, however- a feeling I'm hooked on, in fact- that this third time will be the charm. Why? Because I'm not selling things through Zazzle. Why else? Because I tried to set something up in CafePress and it was an ugly, unwieldy clusteryouknowwhat of epic proportions. All of these failure-lined roads led me to Printfection, where I easily made a store. A store with a nice (if fairly barren at this point) page! A store with different sections! A store I can organize and personalize! A store where I can sell this!
I swear, every time I think I've seen the ultimate product, I see a new one that is ultimate-er. So, check it out. There are shirts of all sorts and drinkware of a few sorts. I'm trying to boost my necromancy stats so I will be able to sell "dark shirts". I know how horror types prefer shirts that swing on the dark side, so I'll let you know when they're available. In the meantime, browse around. Or don't. It's your life.

On Our Radar: Hotel Theodore in Scottsdale
We stayed at the Mondrian in Scottsdale for our first trip after creating The Jet Set Girls, so we were sad to hear it closed. Opened in its place is the Hotel Theodore and by the looks of it, not a lot changed. The public spaces were open, chic and modern; but the guestrooms were on the small side and the bathrooms were definitely not big enough for our group of four. Your best bet is to come here for TR's Lounge and Teddy's Nightclub; but stay at one of Scottsdale's posh resorts.

24 grate songs
I'd explain the post title, but it's a long story. Okay: when I was a wee-ish bonnie lass, someone gave a friend of mine a mix tape labeled "24 grate songs".
Wow, I guess that story wasn't long at all. Anyway, the point is:
From March 27 - April 2, Film Clubber and super guy Bryce Wilson is running Raimifest at his site, Things That Don't Suck. A week in the horr-o-blog-o-phere-o? Yes, please. I have no idea what I'll do, but I'mma do sumpin'!
I frickin' love Drag Me to Hell.
Speaking of the Final Girl Film Club, Monday is the day! No wait, Tuesday is the day. So, watch Frozen, write something up, and email your link to me. Film Club Day is the one day a month where the whole entire Internet (meaning: five people) comes together in harmonious harmony. Don't miss out on the glory!
In an effort to "get the word out" to people who have probably already heard the damn word 20,000 times, I created a Faceplace page for Ludlow. If you are on the Faceplace and you "like" the page, it will become your friend and you will be updated with all sorts of fascinating Ludlow information, like when there's a release date for the forthcoming Ludlow action figure line. Get in the know! Like the page!
I had the distinct honor of being interviewed by Michael Varrati for Peaches Christ's website. If you want to read it and you have eyes, then click here to do it!

Ritz-Carlton Toronto Opens Today
The Ritz-Carlton is coming to Canada today with the opening of its Toronto hotel near the financial and performing arts districts. While we're looking to head south this month, we're excited to know there's an outpost of the Ritz next time we have an opportunity to go to Toronto. The guestrooms are predictably lux with floor to ceiling windows overlooking either Lake Ontario or the city and the bathrooms have heated marble floors, plasma t.v.'s, and rain showers. The hotel's signature restaurant is Toca by Tom Brodi and features a Canadian menu with homegrown products from local suppliers We're curious about the walk-though pastry kitchen, the in-kitchen chef's table and the glass encased cheese cave. The lounge located on the same level offers tapas and a raw bar if you're in the mood for lighter fare. For more information visit www.ritzcarlton.com/toronto.

A Peek Inside Bev Sanders' Carry On Bag
As the founder of one of the first snowboarding companies and the Las Olas Surf Safaris for Women, which she currently runs, Bev Sanders has seen the best of the snow and the surf. Her recent travels have taken her to Tuscany, Manhattan, Mexico, Las Vegas--and she's headed back to Mexico, near Puerto Vallarta where the camp is, next week. Here's what she travels with:
My carry on is an old Eagle Creek wheelie bag. It has hide-away shoulder straps for trekking- very old school. I'd love to buy a new carry-on, but this one's like an old friend- we've been around the world. I save the bed sheet packages. Great for packing, and perfect for carrying wet swimsuits home.
What are some of your must-have beauty products on the plane?
Alba Suncreen, Aveda Brilliant Conditioner, MyChelle moisturizer and a small spray bottle of cool water (for my face) so I arrive refreshed.
What type of sweater or wrap do you wear?
A Patagonia fleece jacket works when I'm flying to Mexico, but I like black cashmere if I'm heading to the big city.
Any recent or fave plane reads?
Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. It's packed with insight, but light as a feather. Of course, she was the first American woman glider pilot.
Any music playlist for flying?
I love Let Go by Frou Frou. The song makes me feel weightless. Flying is ultimate escape for me and I dream about it constantly.
Anything else you have to have with you when you travel?
I guess I'm an Apple fangirl. I have a MacBook, iPad, and iPhone. Yikes!
Any fave girls' getaway locales?
Come to Las Olas Surf Safaris for Women, we'll share our secret surf spots!

Happy Anniversary to The Silence of the Lambs
That's right kids- as my pal JA pointed out at My New Plaid Pants, The Silence of the Lambs is 20. Twenty. Twennnntyyyyyy GD years old. This doesn't seem possible- why, I saw Silence in the theater (a couple of times, in fact) and I'm only 18.
Anyold, I felt like giving Silence some love today. But how? I've already reviewed it. I've already talked about how it's one of my favorite horror films. I could go on and on about the genius way Jonathan Demme puts the audience squarely in Clarice Starling's cheap shoes by having every character who speaks to her look directly into the camera, making eye contact with the viewer. I could talk about how and why it's really the best work Jodie Foster's ever done in her lengthy career. I could talk about how the true sneaky ninja superstar of the film is Kristi Zea's impeccable production design. But, you know, it's raining outside and so I feel like going to browse at the used bookstore (it's this weird primal reaction I have to rainy days...I don't get it, so don't worry if you don't get it)...therefore, I will simply post up a gallery of delightful images from the film. Happy Anniversary, The Silence of the Lambs! Don't worry- I can't smell anything.
