Audrey Hepburn Auction

Audrey Hepburn catalog
Fashions from the closet of classic style icon, Audrey Hepburn, are up for auction on December 8 in London. The collection is a lesson in 50s and 60s style, with dresses from Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent and Valentino. The Givenchy dress Audrey wore to promote Paris When It Sizzles is expected to be a top seller.

Audrey Hepburn Paris when it sizzlesWe're partial to this strapless Givenchy number from 1956. It's black lace and balloon skirt still feel fresh and modern today.

Proving that she was every bit as gracious as we imagine her to be, Audrey Hepburn gave a number of her gently worn dresses to her friend Tanja Star-Busmann. Audrey even had her dresses made with generous seam allowances so Tanja could have them altered to fit. (That's good news for anyone considering buying and wearing one of the dresses cut for the 32-22-34 star.)

Audrey even donated her wedding dress from a called off marriage. She instructed the designers, the Fontana sisters, to give the dress to "the most beautiful, most poor Italian girl you can find." They did and as a result, the woman and her new husband were sent to Paris for a honeymoon and given kitchen furniture by the town council. They remained married and had three children. It sounds like a fairytale straight from an Audrey Hepburn movie!

Update: The Audrey Hepburn collection resulted in £268,320 (about $440,000), more than twice the original estimate, according to British Vogue.
